Hyderabad, April 28, 2010:- India's no. 1 gas company, GAIL (India) Limited has contributed Rs. 2 crore for flood relief activities in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Shri B. C. Tripathi, Chairman and Managing Director, GAIL (India) Limited handed over the cheque of Rs. 2 crore to Shri K. Rosaiah, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh here today.
GAIL operates around 864 kms of pipeline in KG Basin area supplying and transporting around 16 MMSCMD of natural gas to 36 customers, including Power and Fertilizer plants. Its major customers are GVK Power, Lanco Kondapalli Power, Vemagiri Power, Konaseema Gas Power, Spectrum Power, Andhra Pradesh Gas Power Corporation, Reliance Infrastructure and Nagarjuna Fertilizers. GAIL has laid LPG pipeline from Vizag to Secunderabad for transporting LPG in a safe and uninterrupted manner at a total project cost of Rs.490 crore. Presently LPG is received from HPCL LPG Bottling Plant, East India Petroleum Limited and FA LPG Cavern and is pumped into the pipeline at Despatch Terminal located at Sheelanagar, Vizag for transportation to HPCL, IOCL and BPCL at Vijayawada as well as at Secunderabad.
The VSPL transmission system is South India's exclusive LPG pipeline with a total length of 613.296 km The current throughput of VSPL is approximately 0.74 MMTPA which can increase to 1.164 MMTPA after commissioning of Vijayawada pumping station subject to increase in requirement from OMCs.
Apart from above, GAIL has also contributed around Rs. 2 crore for the social and economic development, mainly in the areas where it has its installations viz. Rajahmundry, Hyderabad and Vizag. Education has been one of the thrust areas of the CSR activities of GAIL. GAIL has been supporting the Municipal schools and libraries by enhancing their infrastructure and also encouraging children to come to school by providing them the facilities for Midday Meal with the objective of improving the literacy rate and education quality of the area.
GAIL has been supporting projects related to healthcare, child welfare and rural development, water supply and sanitation in different parts of Andhra Pradesh under its CSR programme. GAIL has also set up APRDC (Air Pollution Related Disease Diagnostic Center) at M N J institute of Oncology at Hyderabad at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh. GAIL also helped set up APRDC at Soumya Hospital, Vijayawada and the District Hospital, Rajahmundry at a cost of Rs 20 lakh each.
At GAIL, Corporate Social Responsibility stands for continuing commitment for operating the core business in socially responsible way, complemented by investment in communities to produce an overall positive impact on society. The Company as a policy has allocated 2% of its net profit after tax (PAT) of the previous financial year for CSR activities. This overall budget is then distributed amongst seven specific thrust areas as community development, drinking water, sanitation, educational aid, environment protection, healthcare / medical, infrastructure, literacy enhancement/ empowerment.

GAIL, which is the first company in India to own and operate pipelines for LPG transmission, has a 1,900 km LPG pipeline network, 1,300 km of which connects the Western and Northern parts of India while 600 km of network is in the Southern part of the country. The LPG transmission system has a capacity to transport 3.8 MMTPA of LPG.
GAIL owns and operates a gas based integrated petrochemical plant at Pata, Uttar Pradesh with a capacity of producing 400,000 TPA of Ethylene and 410,000 TPA of Polymers i.e. HDPE and LLDPE. GAIL is setting up a 280,000 TPA Petrochemical Complex at Lepetkata, Dibrugarh, Assam at an investment of Rs. 5,460 crore, through a Joint Venture Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited.
GAIL was the first company to introduce City Gas Projects in India and has set up a subsidiary company 'GAIL Gas Limited' to pursue city gas distribution and CNG corridor projects. GAIL has formed eight Joint Venture companies for supplies to households, commercial users and for the transport sector in 8 cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Tripura, Kanpur, Lucknow, Agra and Pune). On the global front, GAIL has established its CNG and City Gas presence in Egypt through equity participation in Fayum Gas, Shell CNG and Natgas, Egypt.
